Unlike the Korean War in which it is set in, Welcome to Dongmakgol is a fun and quirky film with anti-war messages. When soldiers from the US, North and South Korea land at a secluded village, they discover its inhabitants have no contact with the outside world and are not aware on the ongoing war. They then unite to protect it from external threats.
While other films about the Korean War are commonly action-oriented with many battle scenes, Welcome to Dongmakgol approaches the Korean War in a unique way; introducing comedy and lightheartedness to an overall tragic war story. With special effects, slow-motion and perharps also the music from Joe Hisaishi, the film gives an almost surreal, dream-like quality.
The villagers embrace the American, North Korean and South Korean soldiers equally, humanizing them and conveys the meaninglessness and bitterness of war. The North Korean soldiers are also depicted in a good light, driving home the message that all Koreans are just people, regardless of their dialect.
While the story of Welcome to Dongmakgol is fiction, there were in fact people who were not aware that a war had broken out as they lacked communication facilities such as radio and telephones. These people lived deep in the mountains, such as in the Taebaek mountains in the Gangwon-do Province.
Fittingly, the movie was filmed in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do. The set is open for visitors and has become a popular tourist attraction.
