Set during the 1953 ceasefire of the Korean War, The Front Line is centered on the final battle during the Korean war that will determine the border between North and South Korea.

The Front Line is actually based on the Battle of White Horse Hill, the most intense battle fought during the Korean war. Aerok Hill in the film is a fictional background, the real location used as the motif for the movie is the White Horse Hill located in Gangwon-do.

The historical Battle of White Horse Hill took place for 10 days from October 6 to October 15, 1952. It was the most intense battle during the Korean war, with ownership of the mountain changing several times a day and the mountain turning white due to shelling, similar to what is portrayed in the last battle sequence in the movie. In fact, the hill got its name after the battle from its resemblance to a white horse laying down.

The battle at Aerok Hill in the movie concludes with a truce, however, in real life, the ceasefire occurred in 1953. Additionally, the alligator company in the film did not actually exist. It was actually the ROK 9th Infantry Division that fought in the Battle of White Horse Hill and won, earning the title of “White Horse Division”.

The Battle of the White Horse Hill Memorial was established in 1990 and can be visited as part of a DMZ tour.

What sets The Front Line apart from other movies is the appearance of characters that offer the perspective of North Korean soldiers. Furthermore, the narrative unfolds with the characters gradually building camaraderie amidst the conflict. They create heartwarming scenes with previously unseen interactions with the enemy, exploring why the two Koreas are at war and fostering a sense of friendship amid the adversities of war.
