The Battle: Roar to Victory is a 2019 Korean-Japanese period action film, revolving around the Battle of Fengwudong between Korean independence militias and Japanese forces in 1920 during the Japanese occupation of Korea.
The Battle of Fengwudong took place between 6 and 7 June 1920, and was one of the earliest domestic support operations of the Korean independence forces. After the March 1st Movement, the local Koreans' passion and efforts for the anti-Japanese armed struggle were growing rapidly. The Battle of Bongo-dong was the first large-scale clash between the independence army and the Japanese regular army under these circumstances.
Led by Hong Beom-do, the Korean independence army lay in wait in the mountains of Fengwudong while the Japanese troops were lured by another group of Korean independence forces into Bongo Valley. With their advantageous position, The Korean fighters attacked the Japanese troops from all sides, leaving the Japanese suppression battalion unable to counterattack and forced to withdraw.
According to a report by《Tongnip Sinmun》, a newspaper run by the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, the Independence Army killed 157 Japanese soldiers and injured 300 in the Battle of Bongodong. By contrast, only 4 of the independence army were killed and 2 critically injured. The battle is recorded as the historic first victory by Korea’s independence forces.
The reason for this overwhelming victory was the independence army's heightened morale, the commander's foresight, and an excellent operational plan that took advantage of geographical locations.
"The Bongodong Battle occurred only five months after the Provisional Government declared the year of war for independence"
"The Bongodong Battle gave confidence and hope for independence to our people who were suffering under the colonial rule."
"The victory was all the more special because the army consisted of ordinary people, including farmers and laborers at the end of the late Joseon period."
- Moon, 12th president of South Korea, in a social media message for the 100th Anniversary of the Victory at the Battle of Bongodong
